The Web Presence Portal for the American Chemical Society is Released
WASHINGTON, DC (October, 2007) -- After more than 18 months and a lot of hard work we have completed Phase III of the Web Presence Portal project,
which culminated with the public release of the new ACS website/portal.
The site features simpler navigation and a cleaner look & feel. WebLogic Portal is used as the web delivery platform, serving content generated dynamically through
Stellent’s CIS. This allows ACS to leverage the strengths of Portal as a web/application framework, while allowing ACS business users to contribute and manage content using Stellent’s Site Studio. Also featured with this release is a new enterprise search capability powered by Autonomy.
The new site replaces chemistry.org, which was built on the SilverStream platform.
NuWave played a major role in the design and development, initially re-hosting the existing site from SilverStream to BEA WebLogic.
This included migration of several key business applications, most notably the Online Membership Renewal application.
Subsequent efforts focused on
abstracting the data and application layer, creating a content viewer that dynamically pulls content from Stellent, integrating more than a dozen ColdFusion applications,
creation of a search application to front-end the new Autonomy search engine, and utilizing ACS-developed style sheets to drive much of the look & feel and layout.
Along the way we also developed several new applications and enhanced existing ones. Most notably, we developed ChemInsight.org, which allows experts in chemistry to advertise
their services for expert testimony.
The site is planned to extend beyond Membership services to all of ACS, including Publications and Chemical & Engineering News. Functional enhancements
will include single sign-on and personalization, as well as development and integration with a number of enterprise applications.
NuWave is expected to continue support
for this effort well into 2008.
